The authors of Tangled Tree Publishing's first anthology, A Dark Spring, share the inspiration behind their twisted and tangled stories.

Barb Shuler, TANGLED OBSESSIONS
The internet. I was being a nerd and looking up mountains and places for another story I am working on when an image of Mt. Timp came up. A little research of the valley left me going hmm… which in turn led to the chaos that is Tangled Obsessions.

Kenneth Jobe, EARLY RETIREMENT
I was working in a cubicle-filled office much like the one in the story. A co-worker was retiring after decades of loyal service, and I wondered if she felt her time served was worth it.

Kim Deister, TANGLED LOVE
I watch a series on ID Discovery about families who only later discover that one of their own is murderer, rapist, etc. The daughter, granddaughter, and great-granddaughter of criminal attornies, I’ve always been fascinated with both criminal psychology and the seemingly implausible idea that loved ones would be so blind to it. That’s what I wanted to explore in this story.

Laura N. Andrews, A TANGLED ORACLE
Without giving too much away, a certain intrigue of mine caused me to come up with a twist. This twist was actually the start of A Tangled Oracle, and the story stemmed from it. The main character, Oracle, being Greek, was inspired by my yia yia. Although we have no Greek background in our family, we’ve always referred to her as, “yia yia” rather than, “grandma,” or, “nan

M. Billiter, THE BURNING ROCK
I was on assignment for a Jackson Hole, Wyoming-based newspaper when I went out for three days on horseback with a cowboy. I learned to herd cattle, which plants were safe to eat (chokeberries always good and plentiful), and at night I found warmth around a campfire. It’s also when I asked this cowboy, “Why don’t rocks burn?” I honestly didn’t know, and it was the first time he laughed. So, when this story poured out of me, I knew the title would play off that moment on the mountain. “The Burning Rock,” named itself.

M.C. St. John, WE ONLY WANT TO PLAY
We Only Want to Play came to me first as a short story. I was thinking about my own elementary school and how much I enjoyed making up games with my friends during recess. Most of them were silly. Others were intense. But whenever the recess monitor came by to ask what we were playing, every one of us instinctually switched out of the group game. This was an adult, and adults were here to poke holes in our fantasies. As kids, we know this without being told, and without telling each other. Protecting our play world is a territorial instinct. That almost telepathic groupthink fascinated me. What would happen, I wondered, if that instinct turned malignant? I saw kids turning ugly during recess and a young teacher discovering what they were plotting. I knew then that my short story was going to get much longer. I buckled up for the ride and got writing.

R.M. Gilmore, GNARLED
The first thing that came to mind when I saw the theme Tangled was hair. The image of matted, tangled hair dotted with debris, twigs, leaves, popped into my head. One-hundred percent pantsed, Gnarled started with the body and went from there.

Ricky Wells, THE HOUSE ON OAK STREET
I’ve always like haunted house stories, but they often have a tendency toward formulaic plots.  I decided to write a story that had all the set up and anticipation of a haunted house before pulling the rug out from under the reader, pivoting to a monster type of a story.  I also liked the idea of playing with who the monster was in the story as often humanity provides all the necessary behavior to be the monster.

Hate at first sight couldn’t possibly exist, right?

That’s what Grace Buchanan thought, before her useless car stranded her on the side of a deserted road just inside the Green Valley city limits.

When Tucker Haywood—tall and handsome and full of southern charm— shows up to help, her reaction to him is the strongest thing she’s ever felt in her life, and it makes no freaking sense.

It doesn’t make much sense to Tucker either. Not why she hates him, or why he finds her so intriguing. He knows well enough that Grace is moving to Green Valley for a fresh start, not to distract him when he’s got no room for something like her in his life.

The complications between them are endless, but that doesn’t stop her definitely not love-at-first-sight feelings from changing into something else entirely.

Grace and Tucker are about to learn the hard way that in Green Valley, hating someone has never tasted so sweet.

‘Batter of Wits’ is a full-length contemporary romance, can be read as a standalone, and is book #5 in the Donner Bakery series, Green Valley World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

When I looked down, her hands were fisted on the countertop, shaking from the effort of keeping them still.
"I'd take a picture of that," I told her, voice low and charged.
She tilted her chin up toward me. "Of what?"
In the low light of the apartment, her eyes glowed like melted gold.
"Your hands." I licked my suddenly dry lips. "I feel like they're telling me something that I can't figure out."
Grace peered down at the fists she was making, and her fingers relaxed, the skin no longer white around her knuckles.
"What are they telling me, Grace?" I begged.
She ducked under my arm and I exhaled heavily. Without the heat from her body against mine, I took a second to get myself under control. When I turned, she was handing me her camera.
"Go ahead," she said.
I tilted my head. "You want me to take your picture?"
Grace studied the camera, carefully removing the lens cap and pulling it up to her eyes.
She aimed it at my face, and I wondered what she saw. If I looked like I was one thread away from snapping, because that's how I felt.
I'd never felt like I was one quick step away from freedom, but here, I was. One nudge over the edge of the cliff, and she'd have me free falling without a parachute. I'd never, ever wanted it so badly. When I heard the click of the shutter, I rubbed the back of my neck. "Can I see?"
She ignored me, pulling the camera away so she could look at the digital image on the back. Her lips curved in a secret little smile.
"What do you see?" I asked.
Her chest expanded on an inhale. "Frustration." Her eyes met mine. "Want."
Words lodged in my chest, and I couldn't tear them loose.
I held my hand out and she passed the camera to me. With a rough swallow, I squinted at the tiny viewfinder once it was at eye-level. Grace came into my eye line, holding my gaze with such directness that I fought the urge not to throw the camera across the room simply because it was between us.
It was her turn to ask. "What do you see?"
My finger pushed the slick button on top of the camera, and her mouth curled in surprise that I took a shot.
I pushed the button again as she took a step closer.
"You're not answering me," she said lightly.
"Because I can hardly think straight when you're looking at me like that." My admission was rough and hard, out before I could stop it.
She took another step, within reach now, and one of her hands slid up my forearm.
One more picture, the sound of the shutter snapping between us like a shot.
Somehow, I set it down on the counter without smashing it.
"You can't lie to a camera," Grace said quietly, watching her hand on my arm before the other landed on my heaving chest. "It captures things as are they are, good or bad or ugly or beautiful."
I slid an arm around her waist and tightened my grip until she was flush against me. My other hand pushed up the back of her neck and into her hair.
"This is insane," she breathed, dropping her forehead onto my chest.
"No, it's not."
Grace lifted her head and pinned me in place. "Tucker, seventy-two hours ago, I hated you. You can't tell me this doesn't feel a little nuts."
I couldn't stop my smile. "You didn't hate me. Not really."
One eyebrow lifted. "Wanna bet?"

About Karla Sorensen

KS_CROPPED
Karla Sorensen has been an avid reader her entire life, preferring stories with a happily-ever-after over just about any other kind. And considering she has an entire line item in her budget for books, she realized it might just be cheaper to write her own stories. It doesn’t take much to keep her happy…a book, a really big glass of wine, and at least thirty minutes of complete silence every day. She still keeps her toes in the world of health care marketing, where she made her living pre-babies. Now she stays home, writing and mommy-ing full time (this translates to almost every day being a ‘pajama day’ at the Sorensen household…don’t judge). She lives in West Michigan with her husband, two exceptionally adorable sons and big, shaggy rescue dog.

Title: From Scratch
Series: Blue Plate #1
Author: Rachel Goodman
Genre: Light Women's Fiction/Chick Lit

Blurb
A down-home, feel-good debut Southern romance, From Scratch explores one woman’s journey back home to Dallas, Texas, where her family is cooking up a plan that doesn’t quite suit her tastes…

Thirty-year-old Lillie Turner grew up with maple syrup stuck to her skin and bacon grease splattered on her clothes, courtesy of working in the family diner. Thank goodness she escaped all that when she moved to Chicago five years ago. Now a successful strategy consultant and newly engaged to a man who complements her like biscuits and gravy, she has everything she wants.

When an urgent phone call about her father’s health pulls Lillie back to Dallas, she soon learns it was a ruse to bring her home so she can run the diner she’d rather avoid and compete in the Upper Crust, an annual baking competition, with no option to withdraw. Lillie is furious and ready to run back to Chicago, but her father’s haggard appearance makes her wonder if he’s hiding something. Things go from bad to worse when Nick, her handsome ex and the only man she ever truly loved, reappears, looking as scrumptious as ever.

Lillie’s trip home forces her to question the path she’s chosen, find her place in the family she abandoned, and wonder if the life she left behind is what she really wants after all.

"Move around," Nick says. "It'll help flush out the lactic acid in your system."
I nod, too exhausted to reply, and walk back and forth with my fingers linked behind my head. A breeze washes over my face, cooling me, but still my lungs are screaming. I can't seem to suck in enough air.
Nick strides over to me. "You want your breathing to come from deep in your diaphragm. Right here," he says, placing one hand on the curve of my back and the other just below my rib cage, applying pressure. "Can you feel that?" His gaze rakes over my face, painfully slow, as though he's afraid to miss something.
Is he kidding? His palms are burning holes in my shirt, making me dizzy, and he wants to know if I can feel that? Suddenly I go from barely being able to retain oxygen in my lungs to a total inability to breathe at all. I should be shocked that after all this time a simple touch from him has the power to steal my breath, but after what happened between us at the Tipsy Teakettle, nothing surprises me anymore.
Stepping away, I pick up the water bottle lying on the ground by his feet and gulp some down, the liquid sloshing around in my stomach.
"Drink it slowly. Otherwise you'll throw up," he says, tugging on my ponytail. My heart trips in my chest at the way his voice dips with his playful scolding. Sticking out my tongue, I squirt some water at him and stretch my aching muscles. Nick does his own form of post run recovery, which involves some strange yoga poses mixed with light strength exercises. I squeeze my eyes shut when I hear him groan, the sound similar to those he once murmured during sex.
After he's done, he uses the hem of his T-shirt to wipe his neck and forehead. His chest expands and retracts with his breathing, his skin glistening. I swallow thickly, watching a bead of sweat travel down the length of his torso and absorb into his mesh shorts. Everything about Nick is corded muscle and hard, chiseled angles and lines. My eyes drop to his hands resting on his hips, and I have an overwhelming urge to feel them on me. My whole body clenches as I remember exactly what those fingers are capable of.
A dog barks, snapping me out of my haze. I focus on the college-age guy playing fetch with a golden retriever across the park and wait for my heart rate to return to normal.
"It's okay, you know."
"What is?" I ask.
"To check me out," Nick says, smug and without shame. "Don't think I didn't notice your little eye dance."
I balk. "I wasn't checking you out. You were doing those weird poses, and I was curious."
He laughs, deep and sexy, erasing all of my common sense. His soles scuff against the gravel as he saunters toward me. He stops and stands so close I can feel the heat radiating off his body and see the faint scar above his left eyebrow—a casualty from back in my diner days when I accidentally opened the freezer door into his face.
When he speaks, his words send a shiver down my spine. "You forget, Lillie, I know your blush."
My breath hitches, and his smile grows into that destructive grin that's always been deadly to me. I force my eyes away, over to the other side of the parking lot where a woman is adjusting a set of ankle weights, back to the guy still tossing a tennis ball with his dog, down at my grungy shoelaces, anywhere other than at him.
"At least I used to," Nick says, low and hoarse. "Before . . ."
He settles a hand on the crook of my neck, his thumb ghosting along my collarbone, and everything inside me ignites, alive and volatile. I look at him, and the intensity in his stare causes a fresh wave of heat to rush through me. I lean toward him, pulled by invisible fingers. His gaze flicks to my mouth, and as if on their own volition, my lips part. My breath comes in shallow gasps, my body humming in anticipation, waiting for him to pin me against my truck and kiss me the way he did at the Tipsy Teakettle. The way he used to.

I am uncertain how I feel about this book. Lillie is a great girl, if not a little lost about what she really wants in life. Her father tricks her into coming home. Everyone seems to be keeping secrets from her. She runs into the boy who destroyed her. This book is about Lillie discovering herself again and what she really wants. I am not crazy about how it all goes down though. The way her father manipulates her instead of just talking with her irritates me. Everyone in the book including Lillie seems to be okay with it. Like that’s just how he is and there isn’t anything wrong with it. I did like the premise of the book and they other characters. I am happy for Lillie in the end. She figures out who she wants to be and what she wants. I am not sure if I will read the next book in the series or not.

Alec Murray.
He was the one.
From the first moment I saw him, I knew.
I had never been more certain of anything in my sixteen years on this earth.

But Alec didn’t notice me. At least not in the way that I wanted him to.
He noticed my best friend instead.
I stood by and watched their relationship blossom.
An outsider looking in, wishing things were different.
Torn between my loyalty to my best friend and the boy who had unknowingly stolen my heart.

Weighted by feelings I could never express out loud, I wrote them all down.
Every thought. Every feeling.
I poured them all into a letter.
A letter he was never meant to read.

Only that’s exactly what he did.
He read it.
Every single word.
But by then it was too late.

Even if he was no longer dating my best friend.
Even if I was more in love with him than ever.
He was leaving.
I was leaving.
And there was nothing either of us could do to change it.

Alec Murray was my almost fairytale.
The happy ending I swore I’d never get.

But our story is far from over…
