It pained him to hear the roughness of her voice. A solid reminder that he'd almost lost her. The battle that had waged inside him since meeting her had amped back up to full scale. When the nurse was gone, Ben tried again to explain himself. "I was engaged once, you know." "Nope. I had no idea," Layla answered without looking up from her drink. Her apparent indifference hit him right in the heart. "You haven't said much about yourself." "Her name was Lauren. According to her, I'm not fit for a serious adult relationship." This is the third book in this series. They can be read as standalone books though. Ben Marshall served in the Air Force. He has seen and done many things. He can’t serve anymore and bought a ranch in the mountains. Away from people and the stress they cause. Layla Evans was a high power defense attorney. After getting her client off who she knew was guilty she decided she was done doing that. She inherited a ranch from her estranged father. Instead of selling she decides to move there and work the ranch. Ben and Layla meet while she is checking her fence line. It is a tense first meeting. Neither is prepared for the instant connection they feel. Ben and Layla begin a friendship of sorts. But when someone begins targeting Layla things change for Ben. He can’t help the overwhelming feeling to protect her he has. At first its little things and they progressively get worse. Someone is clearly out to get Layla. Layla has an idea about who it could be but would he go that far? I really enjoyed reading this book. Layla and Ben are great characters. Both of them feel like they need to be away from people. Ben has physical and emotional scars. Layla’s are just emotional. She has issues with the way her previous job made her feel. She loves being a lawyer just not that she helped the bad guys get away with their crimes. She really believes everyone deserves a chance to defend themselves. This series as a whole is great. I look forward to more books in this series. Great job Carolyn.
