Anika Jones has her future carefully plotted out and is checking the boxes, one by one, despite the bumps thrown in her path. This last one is a challenge, but she manages to stay on track; her salon is thriving, and she just bought a house. Unfortunately, when one of her employees runs into trouble, she inevitably gets sucked in, throwing her carefully paced life off-balance. It doesn’t help a friend, who’s been ghosting her for a year, suddenly makes an appearance.

He was born to pig farming, but for Noah (Hog) Hodgekins fighting fires is his calling. He wasted too many years honoring a legacy he wants no part of. But now that he’s finally free from family obligations, there’s nothing holding him back from pursuing the life he’s been dreaming of. The first step is mending bridges with the one person who is central to that future, but she comes with her own challenges, family and otherwise.

Instead of treading carefully to gain her heart, he ends up throwing caution to the wind when her recent string of bad luck lands the FBI on her doorstep.

This is the ninth book in this series. They can be read as standalone books. I haven’t read all of them and wasn’t confused at all. This series is also part of the Polica and Fire: Operation Alpha series. Anika feels like she finally has her life together. She bought a house and has her own salon. Hog is a firefighter and works with Anika’s brother. He also owns a pig farm that was passed down from his father. While it was never his dream to run the farm, he took it on. Anika and Hog have both been interested in each other but never said anything. They are friends and worry about all that could happen if things don’t work out. Hog had pulled back for a while but now he has decided friends is better than nothing. While talking to Anika she mentions he pulled away and he tells her why. He is completely surprised when she tells him she feels the same way he does. They decide to give things a go between them. Then things get interesting. They will have to tell her brother. Plus, a one of Anika’s employees is having trouble with her husband. Of course, Anika helps her and she gets more than she bargains for in return. Someone is now targeting Anika. Hog isn’t going to lose Anika now that he finally has her the way he has always wanted to. Will they be able to figure out who is behind the attacks before it is to late? There is more going on than anyone knows. The police and the FBI get involved. This book is action packed with a side of romance. I loved this book. Great job Freya. I love Freya and all her books. I highly recommend her books. She writes books about people in their 30’s and up. Romance doesn’t only happen to the young.
