He’s a hotshot firefighter afraid of nothing.

She’s a plain, ordinary school teacher who scares him to death.

Captain Carson Taylor III is an excellent firefighter, independently wealthy and attracts women like moths to the proverbial flame. But he’s had loss in his life that makes him fearful of commitment. He’s not about to get close to anybody again.

Then he meets Grace Lansing, a woman who embodies everything her name implies and is totally wrong for him. No way will he let her get to him.

What happens when two people who have nothing in common fall in love? Is their relationship doomed?

Carson couldn’t believe he was so mad at Grace. Since she absconded from his house two days ago while he slept, feelings had seethed inside of him but he thought he’d successfully killed them. That was why he followed her outside the restaurant. She started toward the car and was about to get in when he said, “Not so fast.”

Turning to him, she asked in a harsh whisper, “What are you doing?”

He took her hand and pulled her aside, leaving the valet holding the handle of the door. Faith got out of the car and came around. “Grace?”

“I’m fine. I’ll be right there.” She searched his face and seemed puzzled. “What do you want from me?”

“Certainly not what I got.”

Her eyes narrowed. “I thought you got a lot that night.”

“You, too.”

“I admit I did. So?”

“How could you leave me after what we experienced together?”

“How could I not? You made it clear you only wanted a fling. I made it clear I wanted more.”

“You didn’t even give me a chance…” His voice trailed off. What was he saying? She was right. But this whole thing wasn’t. “It’s your birthday.”

“That’s a non sequitur. What does it matter?”

“I would have wanted to be with you when you turned thirty.”

She blew out a heavy breath. “Carson, you can’t have your cake and eat it too. You want something superficial and I don’t. You simply can’t have me under those circumstances.”

“I can’t…”

“I know. You can’t share yourself. I’m not trying to change you.”

“I’m conflicted, Grace.”

She lifted her hand and cradled his cheek. “I’m sorry. I hope you get what you want out of life.” She arched a brow. “I intend to.”

She walked back to the car. It drove away, leaving him bereft. There, there it was. He didn’t want to feel bereft. He didn’t want to feel anything.

This is the sixth book in this series. They can be read as a standalone books but are better read in order. I haven’t read the first two but I have read the others. Carson is independently wealthy and often finds himself on the outside of the brothers of fire. This is one of the reasons he quit the group. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t wish he was still part of the group. They want him to open up and talk and he just can’t do that. Then he meets Grace. There is just something about the woman. She is a special ed teacher and they met when he came to give a presentation in her classroom. Grace knows that a relationship with Carson can only lead to heartache. Carson is persistent and Grace gives in. But instead of making Carson happy it scares him. She wants more than he can give and when she makes it clear that she won’t keep dating him because of it Carson isn’t sure what to do. He finds that he keeps running into Grace. He is also not feeling like himself. He must decide if he wants to keep feeling like this or take a chance and open up to Grace. This book was an emotional one. Carson has his reasons for being closed of emotionally. It is not healthy for him and he is just realizing how much it is stopping him from living a full life. Grace is his complete opposite but he can’t help the way he feels about her. Grace is drawn to Carson just as much but she refuses to allow herself to be hurt again. I love how she helps Carson and how much he changes and grows. Wonderful book. I can’t wait to read the next one in the series. The first two are on my TBR list. Great job Kathryn.
