This is the second book in this series and they must be read in order.  Mariana is now the acting queen.  She is torn between her expected duty and what she really wants.  Ameria still wants to be the queen and wants vengeance for what happened to her father.  They girls are about to learn about a haunted past that affects what the girls are dealing with now.  A civil war almost happened 24 years ago and the same things that caused that are still affecting things now.  While the civil war was averted; how it was averted caused a ripple effect.   The girls are growing closer to uncovering the prophecy and their past that affects their futures.  While Mariana has been told all her life she will take the crown she doesn’t necessarily want it but she can’t turn it down either.  Ameria has been taught court politics her whole life and wants to be the queen.  Then there is Kyle who has fallen for Mariana who is bound by the blood and arms oath.  “Fear to the fearless. Hope to the hopeless.  Mercy to those who hate you.  Death to those who love you.  That is your destiny, Princess of Kale, Princess of Koloso, heir to both.” – Prophecy of the Kalian Twins.  Will the girls be able to uncover everything before it’s too late?  For every choice there is a consequence.  Will they be able to handle the outcome of the choices they make?  I liked this book more than the first one.  I feel more Mariana.  She has been groomed for something her whole life that she doesn’t really want but can’t seem to let go of either.  I think that if she could she would run away with Kyle.  They are all bound by oaths, promises, and expectations.  Ameria feels like Mariana gets everything.  I love the whole mystery and romance of this story.  K.L. Bone is a fantastic author and I love all her books.  I can’t wait for the next book in this series to find out what happens next.
