Book: The Last Shot
Author: Sarah Hubbard
Genre: Contemporary Romance/ New Adult
Synopsis
Annie: As a child I was unwanted and unloved. Tossed aside until my maternal grandmother came to claim me. Life got better after that, and it got better still when I met Ethan Michaels, the boy down the street who was determined to make me feel like I mattered. At first he was my friend, but then he became much more. But love isn’t real. Not in my world.
When Ethan left to pursue professional hockey I had to make a clean break. I couldn’t wait for him to find someone better, couldn’t wait for him to break my heart. It’s better to leave than be left. But now he’s back, and I can't run from him anymore.
Worse…he won't let me.
Ethan: Annie Fraser owned me as a kid. She owns me still. When I got my first contract to play professional hockey I asked her to come with me, but she wouldn’t leave Rawdon, not while her grandmother was sick. I understood. Still, I wanted to stay together, do whatever I could to keep her.
But she wanted to run.
I loved her enough to let her.
Now I’m back in town and I’m pissed. I think I hate her. I’m sure of it. Until I see her… and those old feelings come rushing back. I won’t let her walk away again. I don’t care what it takes.

Excerpt
I want to defend Ethan, because Charlie's on the outside looking in and I don't like him thinking that Ethan is...whatever he thinks Ethan is. He can't know how Ethan helped pull me from the darkness that consumed me when I first came to this town. He made me smile, for the first time after my mom abandoned me. He spent all of his time just being there for me, loving me, making me feel like I mattered. On the outside and to the press he might look like a jackass but I know better. They only see the self-destructive Ethan. They don’t get to see the side I see, the side he seems to save just for me.
My Review
This book was a great read; very emotional at times. Annie and Ethan became friends were so came
to live with her grandmother. Ethan was
completely taken by her right away; he knew she was the girl for him. Annie has had already been through so much at
that point and it was hard for her to let people in but she let Ethan in. Eventually their friendship turned into more
when they graduated from High School.
Shortly after that Ethan was given the opportunity to play professional
hockey in the states. This was his dream
and he took it. He told Annie they would
make it work. Annie post continued to
hold her back in some ways and she figured it was better to break things off
with Ethan before he realized he could do so much better than her and break it
with her crushing her. So that’s exactly
what she did. Now three years later she
has finished nursing school and has her first job. While at work one night she is given a new
patient; Ethan’s brother Manny. Her past
is about to collide with her future. She
is dating a doctor who works at the same hospital she works at however she
knows that she will never feel for him what she feels for Ethan. What will she do when she comes face to face
with Ethan? Ethan hates Annie now or at
least he thinks he does. She broke it off
with him and then changed her number.
When he comes to see his brother in the hospital and finds out Annie is
Manny’s nurse he imagines saying all kinds of things to her, however when he
sees her all that changes. All his
feelings for her from before come rushing back.
He let her get away once before but he won’t make that mistake again. This book had some twists and turns that made
it different from other books like it. I
really got into this story. Neither
Annie nor Ethan had an easy childhood but they were everything to each other. Ethan is willing do anything to make this
second chance with Annie work. All Annie
has wanted is a family but she lets her insecurities get in the way. I highly recommend this book. I don’t want to give away to many spoilers
but this book pulls you. This is the
first book by Sara Hubbard I have read and I look forward to reading other
books by her in the future.
