OUAA synopsis
"Sugar, Jules and I had run for our lives. Only our shadows had followed us. And no matter how hard we tried, we couldn't outpace them."
All-around bad boy, and twenty-five-year-old heir to the Jameson fortune, Tommy Jameson, knows three things: - His family is disappointed in him. - Overcoming his addictions won't necessarily crush his vices. - He is wildly in love with Sugar Scarborough, a girl who is dealing with her own addictions and an insatiable need to please. Danger sends Tommy, Sugar and their friend, Julian Fitzpatrick, a heavily medicated, socially dysfunctional genius, fleeing from Green Willow Recovery Center. Now, together, they will face the outside world and uncover a horrifying mystery while being forced to confront their inner demons

This book isn’t what I typically read but the synopsis made me curious.  Turns out it was a great read.  There was intrigue, danger, romance, and at the end a great love.  The story is told in reverse, everything has already happened and the one of the main male characters, Tommy is telling it to a friend.  The main characters Tommy, Sugar, and Julian are all in a recovery center.  Some people are there because they have mental problems, some to help them overcome their drug dependencies.  Julian is there for the first reason, Sugar and Tommy more for the second.  Tommy is in love with Sugar but she is the one drug he won’t let himself have.  Then something horrible happens and they find themselves on the run.  Julian finds out some horrible truths about his past.  Sugar and Tommy find that they can’t stop what they feel for each other anymore.  Tommy is discovering things about his friends that he didn’t know.  Tommy is discovering that he was kind of selfish.  He thought he had the world biggest and most pressing problems.  He is learning that isn’t true.  His problems aren’t worse than anyone else’s just different and not even all that different.  They find that being on the run might have turned out to be the best thing for them.  I really enjoyed this book.  I found myself really drawn into their problems and how they wound up in the recovery center.  Sugar’s past was hard.  She found herself doing things just to get the attention of her mother even if it wasn’t good attention.  Jules has always had mental problems and then add to that the feeling of never being enough for your father.  Tommy never really had a relationship with his father.  Nothing he ever did was good enough for his father to be proud of Tommy.  They all had problems and they all were trying to work through them in different ways.  This story was powerful and hard at times.  Reading some of the things they went through was hard at times.  I would love to read more about these characters.  I will be looking for other books by Tess to read.
